This week's listening
has mainly been the new albums from Jurassic 5, Bugz in the Attic, Quantic and Pharrell. Three of the four are excellent - J5's oldschool schtick is still working well despite the departure of Cut-Chemist; Bugz are more commercial than I had expected, but it is still an incredible left-field dance album; Quantic is masterful as ever, with a wider range of influences (especially Mulatu Astataque, with whom he has recorded an album) much in evidence. The other is rather disappointing and sounds like the outtakes from other Neptunes productions - it is telling that the standout track is Can I Have It Like That.

Lukeski, my ambition is to one day recognise one of the artists you mention. Am I old and living in an ivory tower or is your taste supremely obscure?
Surely you recognise the song in the video? Jurassic 5 are big amongst older hiphop fans. Quantic is the ridiculously talentd Will Holland from Brighton, and Bugz in the Attic are a kind of London producers supergroup - their 'Booty Lala' has been an enormous London club track over the last couple of years.
I'll have to blame geographic isolation then. Don't people listen to Madonna and Abba any more, like they did in my day?
Yes they do. I usually play this stuff early on, and people start to move without realising that they are dancing. Then as the evening proceeds and levels of intoxication increase, I slip into a more popular mode, playing tracks by such artists as Madonna, Abba, Gloria Gaynor, etc...
