wanted to produce a piece of work composed entirely of quotations, in which each quotation informed all others, with no need for commentary. Could dear Walter have simply linked to others had he had a blog?

Yes, he could have and should have. How ludicrous of him not to have thought to invent the internet when he was alive and, thus, blogging. Honestly, how can past folk have been SO dim? Too mysterious. I only didn't bother inventing the internet myself because I KNEW someone else was about to, just when they did.
