A break...

By the end of next week I should have time to stop and think at work. And then I can decide waht to do for a holiday this year. Khorog is a distant possibility. Schull is closer, as is Berlin. Actually, in certain ways the destination doesn't matter. The break does. Ideally somewhere without mobile or internet connection. Where I can vaguely get by in the language. And cheap(ish). Any other suggestions gratefully received...

Have you considered Cornwall? I think it covers all your criteria...

I can highly recommend Berlin, of course. Even this very flat. Hopefully Pavvers will second that come late(ish) June.

I know nothing about Khorog, but speaking of Tajik cities, there are always Samarkand and Bukhara. "What the fuck's he on about?" I hear you protest. "They're in Uzbekistan." But I read recently - dunno if this is bollocks - that this was a Soviet ruse and the cities are, historically, Tajik. Ralph has been and said they were utterly fantastic.

The first ad on Schull's website is for:

Digitalforge - Wireless Broadband

Oh dear. What about Connemara or the West of Ireland?

I have to say that Galway has always appealed - especially visiting the Burren or the Arans. I also have family in Mayo - my parents went on a 'meet the relatives' trip a few years ago and were welcomed with open arms throughout the county. Where are you from in Cork, btw?

What's fuelled the Irish thing? Why are you missing out the in-between Scottish stage of your roots, or are they too familiar? Did you ever actually live in Scotland, or were you whisked south of the border from Aberdeen ASAP?

6 weeks + a lot of family holidays in Scotland. Ireland makes me sleep. In a good way. The fresh air knocks me out every time. And I did like a drink and a bit of Irish folk music.

Replying weeks later but - I'm from near Macroom, middle of countryside really. I lived in Cork city for 3 years and have no immediate plans to return.
